Neue Deutsche Welle!
I have discovered fantastic music that emerged out of Germany in the 80s! I am doing all I can these days to find out more about Neue Deutsche Welle (NDW) because it is wonderful. Why? 1) It is in German 2) It is good music (well not all NDW). Es ist sehr geil und toll! Here are just a few examples of what I'm talking about. I recommend watching every one of these videos multiple times (I know I have). Enjoy!

When I clicked the first video, a youtube window opened up and started playing the video at the same time that it was playing on your blog window, and hearing both of them play at once with a split-second time difference had me totally overwhelmed and overstimulated by German weirdness. I found it much more manageable to watch one video at a time.
Those Trio guys are awesome. First video: they're so like "yeah, we're playing music, whatever." Even the crowd is like "sure, whatever." Also: haha at the guy fumbling and dropping his drumsticks at the end.
I remember Da Da Da! So great. aw. That and 99 LuftBalloons. Good times.
DOF guy scares me a little bit.
i love the first video, truly brilliant.
the DOF sounds like Arnold Schwarzenegger. no? :)
Papi, schenk mir einen Computer!
(Daddy, give me a computer)
Hilfe für die ganze Familie!
(It will help the family a lot)
Liebling, nimm die Rüstungsspirale!
(Darling/Sweetie, take the arms race/sprial?) I'm a bit confused by "Rüstungsspirale" which literally means "arms-spiral"
Tanz den Gummitwist!
(Dance the Gummitwist!)
Trio: Herz ist Trumpf (Hearts are Trump) It's actually fairly easy to find an English version, Trio did a lot in English.
Nena: Neunundneunzig Luftballons (99 Balloons or 99 Air Balloons, also note that the English version Nena also sings is "99 Red Balloons" would be in German would be "Neunundneunzig Rote Balllone") It's a cold war protest song.
DÖF: I can see why they remind you of Arnold, they are Austrian, He is Austrian. DÖF was formed by two Austrian comedians, but soon disbanded after only one or two hit singles. Codo is short for Cosmic Dolm or Depp, both of which mean Cosmic Idiot.
Da da da: Well, it's pretty easy to find an English version of this song. "I Don't Love You You Don't Love Me" is basically most of the song.
I was thinking of putting up some lyrics later, but they'd mostly be in German. I'm working on translating a lot of them just for kicks. :)
